Gronk! Gronk! Gronk!
Back in April when Bill Belichick picked Rob Gronkowski many dismissed him as the next New England Tight-End too fall miserably below expectations. There were also the more positive observers who looked at this as a sign that The Patriots were going to make Tight End a position of more focus. It's easy for me to say that i was in the latter category because of Gronkowski's incredible rookie season, but in all honesty i was pretty confused how anybody could doubt the kid.
When Gronkowski chanted "Gronk!" over and over with his family he had me excited, when he came out with The Patriots helmet he got me pumped up, and when I went to opening day of training camp all i wanted to see was how Gronk looked catching passes from Tom Brady.
8 months later and Rob has turned in one hell of a rookie campaign. He's played in every game, grabbed 36 receptions for 444 yards, and leads The Patriots in touchdowns with 9, not to mention that there's one game left, and all this was done while sharing time with fellow rookie Aaron Hernandez. Hernandez of course is considered by many to be another extremely promising rookie tight end.
Gronk's 9 TD's is second best for a Rookie Tight End, the only player with more is commonly known as the man who invented the position... Mike Ditka. Now obviously i don't want to get ahead of myself with crazy comparisons, but i was hoping that in a couple of seasons he'd turn into "A Poor Man's Ben Coates". As of right now he's just the favorite Red-Zone Target of The NFL's Most Valuable Player. Needless to say i've set the bar pretty high for Rob Gronkowski.
